Check Out Our Latest Translation Services for Guere

As its name suggests, Côte d’Ivoire uses French as its official language, like many other countries in West Africa. In fact, French is one of the biggest languages throughout the entire continent—but most Africans who speak French don’t speak it as their first language. Instead, most Africans speak one of the many indigenous languages that span the continent, many of which boast large and vigorous communities of speakers. Today, we’re looking at one such language in Côte d’Ivoire: Guere.

Guere is the native language of roughly 400,000 people, which makes it pretty big in West Africa, which is overflowing with linguistic diversity. Of course, most Guere speakers are multilingual, also learning the major lingua francas of their region: usually French and Jola. But in day-to-day life, their primary language is Guere. Unfortunately, resources for Guere are scarce, as is the case with many African minority languages. This can make it hard to find reliable translation services for languages like Guere. But at TranslationServices.com, we cater to minority languages all over the world, and we’re proud to introduce our new Guere translation team today.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into the Guere language.

Guere—which you may also see spelled Guéré or alternatively called Wè or Wee—is spoken in the westernmost reaches of Côte d’Ivoire, specifically in the Montagnes Region, previously split between the now defunct Dix-Huit Montagnes and Moyen-Cavally Regions. The language belongs to the Kru subfamily, a cluster of related languages spoken in southwestern Côte d’Ivoire and southeastern Liberia, within the larger Niger–Congo language family, which spans much of sub-Saharan Africa. Technically, Guere is related to Swahili—but only very distantly.

Guere is characterized by numerous dialects, which can be sorted into three main dialectical groups: Southern Guere, Western Guere, and Northern Guere. Dialects can differ substantially from one another and aren’t always mutually intelligible. This may partially have to do with Guere’s complex phonology—for example, Southern Guere has seven more consonants than Northern Guere. The language is also tonal, and remarkably so—Southern Guere has 10 separate tones, and Northern Guere has been claimed to have as many as 14, although the claim remains unverified. But regardless of the number of tones, the challenges of translating to and from Guere are clear, which is why it’s important to work with native-speaking translators with experience.
