Welcome to one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world: Nigeria and Cameroon! In Nigeria, you’ll find more than 520 distinct languages spoken, with neighboring Cameroon another 250. Most of these languages come from the same language family—Niger–Congo—but many of them are still highly distinct despite sharing a common history. Although people in Nigeria and Cameroon tend to learn English or French to communicate with their compatriots who speak other languages, the indigenous languages, such as Tiv, tend to remain strong.
Tiv is a major indigenous language in Nigeria and, to a lesser extent, Cameroon spoken by around 4.6 million native speakers. It’s spoken widely by the Tiv ethnic group, although not by all members—some speak other, closely related languages. Despite its size and relative importance, Tiv tends to be overshadowed by even bigger languages, particularly English, or at least Nigerian Pidgin English. This places the language under threat in an increasingly globalized world. It’s important to support indigenous languages like Tiv with high-quality translation services, and that’s just what we at TranslationServices.com are doing with our newly introduced Tiv translation services.

Tiv: A major minority language in Nigeria
Although the biggest indigenous languages in Nigeria are, by far, Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, Tiv nonetheless places in the top 10. It’s situated mostly in some states of the North Central region, especially Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Cross River, Adamawa, Kaduna, and Abuja. It’s also spoken in Cameroon, although by much smaller numbers. Tiv is by far the largest member of the Tivoid branch of Niger–Congo languages, its importance highlighted by the fact that the branch bears its name. Tiv has no recognized dialects but does differ somewhat in accent among different regions.
Tiv is a grammatically complex language, featuring nine different noun classes, which function similarly to the grammatical gender of languages like French or Spanish. Each noun class features different affixes (i.e., prefixes and suffixes), and plural forms are considered different classes. Adjectives inflect based on the class of the noun they modify, sometimes using suffixes and other times prefixes. They can also be placed either before or after the noun. Additionally, Tiv is a tonal language, featuring a high, medium, and low tone as well as their combinations. Given all the differences from English, Tiv is a tricky language to translate to and from, but that’s why we hire native speakers for our Tiv translation team.
