Introducing Our New Sapo Translation Services Team

On the surface, Africa may not appear very linguistically diverse—most countries across the vast continent have set colonial languages as their official languages, with the most common being English, French, and Portuguese, with Arabic reigning in the north. But if you look below the surface, you’ll find a vibrant mosaic of languages still spoken vibrantly by communities across the continent. Most Africans speak an indigenous language first and learn the national and regional lingua francas second. One of the many vibrant minority languages in Africa is Sapo.

Sapo—sometimes called Sarpo—is also referred to as Southern Krahn, highlighting its close relation to Western Krahn and Konobo (Eastern Krahn). Sapo is the smallest of the three Krahn languages, with just around 36,000 native speakers as of 2006. However, the language remains in good standing, spoken vigorously in its local community, even though most speakers have learned English as well. Most translation firms overlook Sapo, but at TranslationServices.com, we’re proud to support this minority language with our new Sapo translation services.

A brief exploration into the language of Sapo

Sapo speakers live in Liberia, a country situated on the southwestern coast of West Africa. Specifically, Sapo is spoken in the east of Liberia, as part of a dialect continuum that stretches across coastal Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. It’s primarily concentrated in Grand Gedeh County and Sinoe County. Despite its small number of speakers, Sapo can be broken down into several distinct dialects, notably Juarzon, Kabade (Karbardae), Nomopo (Nimpo), Putu, Sinkon (Senkon), and Waya (Wedjah).

Sapo is closely related to the other languages in its dialect continuum, with the similarities becoming less apparent across larger geographical distances. In addition to Western Krahn and Konobo (Eastern Krahn), these close cousins include Wobé, Guéré (or Wè), Nyabwa, Glaro, Twabo, Daho, and Doo. Sapo belongs to the Kru subfamily, which is classified as part of the Niger–Congo language family, but some linguists posit that Kru may be an independent family, since its languages are markedly different from other Niger–Congo tongues. Either way, what’s clear is that it’s nothing like English, which means that translation can be difficult and necessitates the expertise of native-speaking Sapo translators. That’s who’s on our team.
