We’ve Just Started Offering N’Ko Translation Services

West Africa exhibits incredible linguistic diversity, with hundreds of distinct languages spoken vigorously by large communities all across the region. In order to unite their diverse populaces, these countries have to designate lingua francas: usually English, French, Portuguese, or Arabic. But few people speak them natively—rather, they speak an indigenous language as their first. Most indigenous African languages are poorly supported, with scarce resources or translation services, but N’Ko is an increasingly popular literary language in West Africa.

N’Ko has no native speakers—rather, it’s a standardized, unified koiné of several Manding languages, especially Maninka, Bambara, and Dyula. Just these languages alone boast more than 11 million native speakers, with some 20 million additional second-language speakers. The N’Ko alphabet was developed in 1949 and has been seeing increasing growth in recent decades, ever more used for literacy education for speakers of various Manding languages. The explosion of text messaging and other forms of electronic communication has also contributed to N’Ko’s rise. N’Ko was even added to Google Translate in June 2024, but professional translation services for the language remain scarce—so we at TranslationServices.com decided to offer our own N’Ko translation services.

N’Ko: West Africa’s rising literary language

N’Ko is primarily used in the western portions of West Africa—countries like Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and more. It aims to represent all Manding languages by harkening to the proto-Manding phonology and the etymology of words. People who use the N’Ko script will all write words in the same, standardized way but pronounce them in their own language—for example, the N’Ko word ߕߐ߮ (, meaning “name”) is pronounced as /tɔɡɔ/ in Bambara and as /tɔɔ/ in Maninka. The unification of N’Ko allows speakers of various Manding languages to easily communicate with one another.

N’Ko follows the basic grammatical structures that form the backbone of all Manding languages, such as a subject-object-verb word order and postpositions rather than prepositions (i.e., prepositions placed after the noun). Like many other languages in West Africa, the Manding languages are highly analytic, meaning they feature minimal inflection. Rather, word order and particles are important in conveying the relationships between words. Manding languages favor suffixes over prefixes when they do have inflection. Although the Manding languages are highly similar to one another, they’re vastly different from English, which can present challenges in translation—but that’s why we hire professionals.
