We Now Provide Professional Markwet Translation Services

With a population of more than 50 million, Kenya is a vibrant East African country with a long, rich history and a plethora of distinct ethnolinguistic groups creating a multicultural mosaic of different customs and languages. More than 65 indigenous languages are scattered across the nation, with most Kenyans learning Swahili or English for purposes like administration, education, and media. But for most Kenyans, their mother tongue is one of these many proud indigenous languages, like Markwet.

Markwet is the native language of roughly 180,000 people among Kenya’s 50+ million population, and while this may sound small, the language is used vigorously in its native community. Of course, the ubiquity and prestige of national lingua francas English and Swahili pose a threat to Markwet, as do other, bigger minority languages in the region, which is why translation agencies are generally hesitant to work with Markwet. But at TranslationServices.com, we present our new Markwet translation team with pride.

Discovering the secrets of the Markwet language

Markwet is the native language of the Marakwet people, a Kalenjin tribe indigenous to western Kenya. Most Marakwet people live in the northern portion of Elgeyo-Marakwet County, neighboring the Keiyo people who reside in the southern portion. The Marakwet are further divided into various clans, spread across a few territorial regions, namely Almoo, Cherangany (Sengwer, Kimaala), Endo, Sambirir (Borokot), and Markweta. Different dialects exist within Markwet, with Endo and Sambirir emerging as common terms for Northern Markwet and Southern Markwet, respectively.

Markwet ultimately comes from the Nilo–Saharan language family, more specifically occupying the Kalenjin cluster of Nilotic languages. It’s closely related to many other languages in the region, including Nandi, Kipsigis, Terik, and neighboring Keiyo. The default word order in Markwet is verb-subject-object, which is common in Nilotic languages but uncommon around the world, found in only about 9% of global languages. Markwet incorporates grammar but not to the extent of languages like French and Spanish, with gender generally reserved for person and animal nouns. However, inanimate nouns are sometimes also gendered in Markwet. Another unusual feature of the language is that it marks the nominative (subject) case but not others—in most languages, the nominative is unmarked and the other cases are marked. But Markwet’s unique characteristics won’t trip up our translators, since they’re native speakers intimately familiar with all the nuances of this East African language.
