Rincón Zapotec Translation Services Are Our Newest Offering

The vast majority of people in Mexico speak Spanish, most as their native language—so it may surprise you to learn that the indigenous Zapotec languages are spoken natively by a whopping 490,000 people (and that’s not even the biggest indigenous language in Mexico—that honor goes to Nahuatl!). There are an estimated 50 different Zapotec languages that make up the cluster, with differing numbers of speakers, and one of the largest is Rincón Zapotec.

Approximately 41,000 of Zapotec’s 490,000 speakers use the Rincón Zapotec variant of the massive language group, although Temaxcalapan dialect is so distinct that some linguists argue it should be classified as a separate language. Rincón Zapotec is a relatively far cry from other Zapotec languages, sporting a measly 65% mutual intelligibility rate with the next-closest language, Choápam Zapotec, spoken by around 12,000 people. Like other indigenous languages in Mexico, Rincón Zapotec is threatened by Spanish, and dedicated translation services are rare—but at TranslationServices.com, we’re eager to provide our new Rincón Zapotec translation services.

A closer look at the details of Rincón Zapotec

Rincón Zapotec is native to various parts of Oaxaca, a southern Mexican state known for its high proportion of indigenous language speakers. The Rincón variant is further north than most other Zapotec languages, with the notable exception of Choápam Zapotec, which extends into the neighboring state of Veracruz. The Zapotec languages form one of the major branches of the Oto–Manguean family, a large and influential language family in southern Mexico.

Although the Zapotec languages are grouped together and often treated as a single language, they can differ significantly, sometimes more so than Romance languages like Spanish, French, and Italian. Rincón Zapotec, like its sibling languages, exhibits a basic word order of verb-subject-object, common to the Oto–Manguean family more broadly. However, the word order can change in some cases, as Zapotec languages allow speakers to place other constituents at the beginning of a sentence for emphasis or focus. Rincón Zapotec doesn’t feature noun cases, and since plurality and possession are denoted by other words in the sentence, noun inflection is virtually nonexistent. Verbs, on the other hand, inflect to denote aspect, which can indicate whether an action is complete, ongoing, or habitual, among other attributes. Given the differences between Rincón Zapotec and English, translation can be tricky, but that’s why we hire native speakers of Rincón Zapotec for our translation team.
