We’re Proud to Now Offer Translation Services for Suba

There are far, far more languages in the world than countries. Some countries are home to dozens or even hundreds of distinct languages, some spoken vigorously by large communities and others struggling for vitality against the many pressures of the modern, multilingual world. Kenya is an example of a highly multilingual country, with more than 65 languages indigenous to the East African nation’s territory. Some, like Kikuyu, are thriving, while others have faced decades of repression, such as Suba (not to be confused with the Subanon languages of the Philippines).

Today, Suba is spoken by about 140,000 people, but the language has a complicated history and an uncertain future. The Suba culture and language has been heavily influenced and somewhat eroded through contact with the neighboring Luo people, with many Suba speakers learning fluent Dholuo. Suba’s status is further complicated by the unfavorable view from the Kenyan government, which prioritizes English and Dholuo over the native language of the Suba people. Recent years have seen efforts to revitalize and strengthen Suba, which has increased the number of speakers. We at TranslationServices.com are honored to participate in Suba’s revitalization efforts by providing dedicated Suba translation services.

Suba: a Kenyan language under threat

The Suba people are believed to be among the last tribes to migrate to the East African nation, tracing their heritage back to the Ganda, Luhya, and Soga peoples. Indeed, Suba bears a striking resemblance to Luganda, the de facto national language of Uganda. Suba speakers live on the eastern shores and islands of Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes. The islands of Rusinga and Mfangano in particular are highly populated by Suba speakers.

Suba is classified as a Bantu language, a massive language grouping that accounts for more than half of all languages indigenous to Kenya. However, Suba has sustained considerable influence from the Nilotic language of Dhuluo, which makes it somewhat distinct from other Bantu languages. Nonetheless, Suba retains the quintessential markers of a Bantu language, including the subject-verb-object word order, the extensive use of prefixes over suffixes, and the wide-reaching noun class system that affects all aspects of the language. With 10 noun classes, Suba has far fewer than most Bantu languages, but only because it includes both the singular and plural forms within the same class. Our native-speaking Suba translators are intimately familiar with the nuances of the complex language, so you don’t have to worry about your translation project.
