Our Team Is Now Introducing Marwari Translation Services

The linguistic landscape in India is much more complex than one might think. For one thing, it ranks as the world’s fourth-most linguistically diverse country, with some 450 distinct languages. The precise number depends on how they’re counted, as many languages in northern India are sometimes considered Hindi dialects. The distinction between a language and a dialect is largely political, and linguists typically treat minority languages in northern India, like Marwari, as distinct languages.

Marwari is spoken by an estimated 21 million native speakers, at least according to the 2011 Indian census, but the language likely boasts even more speakers who were counted under Hindi. Despite being a major language in India, widely spoken in a number of districts, it has no official status in the country and is not used as a language of education. The lack of recognition puts Marwari under threat, especially as creeping Hindi influence becomes ever stronger. Languages like Marwari need high-quality translation services to help them thrive in the face of threats, so we at TranslationServices.com are proud to serve this community with our new Marwari translation services.

Marwari: A major Indian language that’s often overlooked

Marwari is primarily spoken in northwestern India, specifically the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana, as well as in smaller communities in Pakistan and migrant communities in Nepal. It’s most prominent in the Rajasthani districts of Jodhpur, Pali, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Nagaur, and Bikaner. Marwari is sometimes called Rajasthani, even though Rajasthani is linguistically classified as a subfamily within the larger Indo–European family. The Rajasthani cluster itself is often conflated with Hindi, albeit controversially.

In India, Marwari is usually written in the Devanagari script, just like Hindi, although in Pakistan, it’s typically written in the Perso-Arabic script. Grammatically, the language is similar to Hindi in many ways, including in its subject-object-verb word order. However, they’re not mutually intelligible, and Marwari differs quite a bit from Hindi in its pronouns and interrogatives (question words), and it even makes a clusivity distinction in the first-person plural. That means that Marwari has multiple words for “we”—one that means “me and you (and maybe others)” and one that means “me and others but not you.” This distinction is useful in clearing up ambiguity but can pose challenges when translating between Marwari and English—but working with experienced native-speaking translators can resolve any issues.
