We’ve Just Added a Nupe Team to Our Translation Services Roster

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and the vibrant West African nation is known the world over, despite the general ignorance of the rest of the world regarding Africa. What you might not know is just how diverse Nigeria is—its 225 million people hail from more than 250 distinct ethnic groups speaking more than 525 different languages. In fact, Nigeria is the third-most linguistically diverse country on the planet, outdone only by Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo make up Nigeria’s three biggest native languages, but Nupe isn’t all that far behind.

Clocking in at roughly 3 million speakers, Nupe is Nigeria’s eighth-biggest native language, with only Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Ibibio, Fula, Kanuri, and Tiv boasting more native speakers in the country. Thus, while Nupe is certainly a minority language within Nigeria, it remains one of the most important and influential languages in the country, particularly in the North Central region where it’s spoken. But unfortunately, few translation companies recognize the value that Nupe offers and neglect to build a Nupe translation team. We at TranslationServices.com are different: we’re proud to translate to and from Nupe.

Exploring Nupe, one of Nigeria’s biggest languages

The Nupe people are indigenous to Nigeria’s North Central region, specifically the states of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. Niger State in particular houses a large number of Nupe speakers, giving the language substantial influence over the area—enough that hundreds of thousands of people from other ethnic groups have learned the language. The language has also influenced others around it, such as the Basse Nge (or Bassa Nupe) dialect of the Basa-Benue language. The heart of the Nupe-speaking world is Bida, Niger State’s second-biggest city, where Nupe speakers form the vast majority of inhabitants.

Like most indigenous languages in sub-Saharan Africa, Nupe comes from the Niger–Congo language family, specifically from the aptly named Nupoid branch of the Atlantic–Congo subfamily. The language is divided into two dialects—Nupe Central and Nupe Tako—and is closely related to nearby languages such as Igbira (Ebira), Gade, and Kakanda. Like the majority of Niger–Congo languages, Nupe uses lexical tone to differentiate words, and the language is littered with insightful proverbs and sayings that hold cultural importance but can complicate translation work, which is why it’s vital to work with professional Nupe translators.
